Exodus 23:28
"And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee."
To my knowledge, Hivite, Canaanite and Hittite are cities, two of which were very powerful at the time. I did not read the bible, and I would not want to offend anyone by falsely interpreting the meaning behind this excerpt. So take the following with a grain of salt.
It seems to me that the hornets as used in Exodus 23:28, are to be used as a weapon. "Which shall drive out...", I think this might be referencing the idea of driving them out of hiding. Hornets, even in biblical times, were known to have painful stings, so this connection is not that far fetched.
The purpose of bringing this up was mainly to illustrate that hornet have been known to be different than bees for quite some time. And the difference is clearly related to the sting and potential aggressiveness of hornets; I say this because the bible has shown to see bees with a sense of purity.
Deuteronomy 7:20
"Moreover the LORD thy God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left , and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed "
Yeah. Hornets as weapons.
Between these two King James excerpts, I think it is pretty clear that the concept of a hornet as a weapon was intended.
